The Concept

The concept of Sports Medicine:
Sports medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness, preventive, curative and scientific rehabilitation of sports related injuries.
The major components of sports medicine are:
a) Pre-participation examination (PPE) and Periodic health checkup (PHC)
– To identify disease and illness for timely treatment
– To identify modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors
– To prevent sudden cardiac death in young athlets

b) Injury prevention program (IPP)
– PPE and PHC
– Proper diet, nutrition and hydration
– Scientific training and mental preparedness
– Correction of modifiable risk factors
– Suitable environment and proper equipment

c) Diet/ Nutrition/ Hydration
– Carbohydrate loading (Pre-Intra-Post)
– Fat, protein, minerals and vitamin loading
– Peri (Before, during and after game hydration)
– Energy drink Vs plain water

d) Doping and drugs
– To follow the doping code of World Anti-Doping Agency
– Identification and avoiding irrational prescriptions, food supplements containing steroids, stimulants, peptides, hormones etc.
– Counseling on the impact of performance enhancing drugs

e) Psychological counseling and motivation
– Positive reinforcement/ positive approach
– Mental preparedness
– Goal setting

f) Scientific sports training and biomechanics
– Knowledge about anatomy and physiology
– Physical fitness/ technical skills

– Training to coaches/trainers about principles and techniques of individual sports, basic life support, first aid measure, Cardio pulmonary resuscitation, RICE: R (Rest), I (Ice packing), C (Compression), E (Elevation).

We work dimentionally on different components of sports medicine. We have been conducting seminars and presentations, providing education through leaflets and be in the field practice providing medical supports in different game events. We have contributed a book named “Sports Medicine”, a reference book as a part of advancement of sports through education.
